This study contributes fresh research evidence relating to the risk and governance challenges of cryptocurrency markets. Building on our understanding of risk from academic literature and wider sources, this study examines the governance challenges posed vis-à-vis four categories of risk: (1) information asymmetry and knowledge-gap risk, (2) opaqueness and criminal risk, (3) technology and security risk, and (4) speculative value and gambling risk. The COVID-19 implication on cryptocurrency risk is also examined. Perspectives from accountants, market participants and wider stakeholders in both Malaysia and the United Kingdom were gathered via online research instruments: (1) survey questionnaires, and (2) virtual interviews. The findings suggest opportunities to step up regulatory initiatives including areas relating to education, cyber security, due diligence, custody and consumer protection.
