Professor Dr. Maliah holds a PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand as well as a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). She has 40 years of experience as an academic and an auditor at a public accountant’s firm. She has been involved in auditing of statutory bodies, financial institutions, investment holding company and a transportation company. She has taught financial accounting, cost accounting, management accounting for Islamic banks, accounting, auditing and governance of Islamic financial institutions at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her experience extends to managing and developing accounting courses. She possesses a strong ability to motivate and manage staff and students.

She also has significant experience working with staff and students of other nationalities whilst teaching at Otago University, New Zealand and the International Islamic University Malaysia. She gained invaluable experience as a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Accounting, Curtin University of Technology, Australia as well as a Visiting Professor at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Curtin University of Technology and Universiti Muhammadiyyah, Indonesia.

At the international level, she was a recipient of four prestigious awards, the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences) fellowship in 2003 and the ACU (Association of Commonwealth Universities) fellowship in 2005. In 2016, she was awarded the Mevlana Exchange programme to Turkey and in 2019 and 2020, voted for the 300 Most Influential Women in Islamic Business and Finance Award (Ranked 81).

Professor Dr. Maliah was the recipient of the prestigious Article of Merit Award in 2007 by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). She also received Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) in 2015 and 2023 for her articles on “Greening Corporate Governance and the Boards” and “Corporate Governance Practices of Islamic Financial Institutions in Malaysia”.

She had three prestigious appointments at the international and national levels: as an expert panel member of the ISO 14501, ISO 14502 and ISO 14503 standards on Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) (from 2014 till 2022); a member of the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board (from 2013 to 2019) and a council member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (from 2013 to 2019).

Her other notable appointments include being a Member of the Task Force on Environmental and CSR Reporting of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA) in 2008, a member of the National (Malaysia) Committee on Material Flow Cost Accounting, Standard Industrial Research Institute Malaysia (SIRIM), task force member of Material Flow Cost Accounting, Malaysian Productivity Centre and chaired the Examinations Committee as well as the Islamic Finance Committee of MIA in 2018. She was also the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences for 3 years from January 2015 to December 2018.

Her pertinent current contributions at the national level include being part of the advisory committee on the development of financial reporting standards for Baitulmal, Zakat and Wakaf (Accountant General’s office) as well as the review of accounting programmes of various universities in Malaysia.
